 Health Benefits of Boswellia

“Boswellia, also known as Indian frankincense, is an herbal extract taken from the Boswellia serrata tree. Resin made from Boswellia extract has been used for centuries in Asian and African folk medicine. It's believed to treat chronic inflammatory illnesses as well as a number of other health conditions.”

“Boswellia serrata is abundant in benefits such as reducing body inflammation and helping treat conditions like osteoarthritis (OA), rheumatoid arthritis and inflammatory bowel disease. It's also a painkiller and can help inhibit cartilage loss.”

Boswellia serrata extract is so powerful that today it's considered comparable to NSAID pain relievers. The five biggest benefits of Boswellia include lowering inflammation, reducing joint and arthritis pain, helping fight cancer, speeding up healing from infections and potentially preventing autoimmune diseases. “Indian Frankincense. Origin: Gum resin from the bark of the Boswellia tree found in India. Claims: Reduces inflammation and treats rheumatoid arthritis (RA), osteoarthritis (OA) and bursitis symptoms. It may also be used to treat symptoms of ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.”

“Many studies of Boswellia’s effect on OA have found that it’s effective in treating OA pain and inflammation.

One 2003 study published in the journal Phytomedicine found that all 30 people with OA knee pain who received Boswellia reported a decrease in knee pain. They also reported an increase in knee flexion and how far they could walk.

Newer studies support the continued use of Boswellia for OA.

Another study, funded by a Boswellia production company, found that increasing the dosage of enriched Boswellia extract led to an increase in physical ability. OA knee pain decreased after 90 days with the Boswellia product, compared to a lesser dosage and placebo. It also helped reduce the levels of a cartilage-degrading enzyme.”

Boswellia, a large branching tree native to India and tapped for its resin, also known as frankincense, has been used in herbal preparations for thousands of years. This resin also contains the primary active components, Boswellic acids found in recent clinical trials to provide numerous health benefits.1

Due to Boswellia's new popularity, we have seen a growing number of companies flooding the market with inferior versions of this supplement. That's why Smarter Reviews has compiled months of research about this extract. We’ll show you what to look for and what to avoid in a Boswellia serrata supplement, and how it can help transform your health.

Long before medications like NSAIDs existed, extracts derived from the Boswellia tree were used to treat a wide variety of conditions, such as body discomfort.

New research has given us a better understanding of how Boswellic acids may benefit our flexibility and mobility2, and boost the systemic health on multiple levels. Clinical studies show us that an effective Boswellia extract must be formulated for bioavailability, standardized to a minimum of 35% Boswellic acids, making it much more effective at addressing health related issues.3

With so many advantages to its use documented, it's no wonder why Boswellia serrata supplements are gaining momentum as a household name in health support. Here at Smarter Reviews, we set out to do the research and pinpoint the abilities that Boswellia serrata uses to support the body.

This is what we found:

Reduce Joint Discomfort

Increase Knee Flexion and Mobility

Enhance Cognitive Functioning and Mood

Increase Levels of BDNF in the Brain

Lower Atherosclerosis Risk

Fight Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress

Help Regulate the Digestive System

More detail

Boswellia (boswellia serrata) is a tree gum resin that has multiple health benefits. Also known as frankincense, it has been burned as incense in religious and cultural ceremonies for centuries.  In today’s alternative health world boswellia is widely regarded as a potent anti-inflammatory nutrient, wherein its primary active ingredient, acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA), inhibits the inflammatory enzyme 5-lipoxygenase.  Excess 5-lipoxygenase is common in joint pain, allergies, respiratory conditions, and cardiovascular problems.  A number of new studies give insights into boswellia, a unique nutrient, even expanding its potential usefulness.

Pain relief / inflammation

Managing pain and inflammation without the adverse side effects of prescription and OTC drugs is one of the great advantages of nutrition. The standardized extracts of Boswellia—an herb with a long medicinal history—offers one of the top choices in this regard. A human clinical trial with knee osteoarthritis confirms the benefits of Boswellia for joint health. Another study confirms its ability to disband problematic germ gangs. A number of studies demonstrate its anti-inflammatory benefits in a variety of health situations.

The knee osteoarthritis study was a double blind, randomized, placebo controlled 90-day study involving 60 people. It tested two different standardized Boswellia extracts, both of which were found to produce statistically significant improvement in pain and joint mobility. The association of joint pain and obesity is a common finding.  Researchers now know that it isn’t just the extra weight causing mechanical wear and tear.  There appear to be common inflammation mechanisms causing both joint destruction and obesity.  One emerging culprit is excessive amounts of lipopolysaccharide (LPS).  LPS is generated as bacteria sheath off their outer wall.  Overweight individuals typically have imbalanced digestive bacteria making larger-than-normal amounts of LPS, which enter the general circulation and trigger inflammation, including joint inflammation.  Another new study shows that boswellia can directly attach itself to toxic LPS, preventing the LPS from doing anything inflammatory.  This is a novel way that boswellia reduces inflammation and is of particular value for individuals who are overweight and experiencing joint pain.

We are now in an epidemic of type 2 diabetes.  Interestingly, many people who persist in this condition also develop type 1 diabetes, because their pancreas gets too inflamed and tired out from having to try to make insulin all the time.  Another recent study shows that boswellia was able to prevent the rise in blood sugar due to toxin-induced type 1 diabetes.  Boswellia protected the insulin producing cells in the pancreas from damage.  It reduced a number of inflammatory messages, including two of the most common that are elevated when a person is overweight (IL-6 and TNFa).  This study supports the idea that boswellia can help protect the pancreas.

Liver Health

In an animal experiment of intentionally induced free radical damage, boswellia reduced the amount of damage in the liver by 80 percent and in the heart by 50 percent.  The researchers demonstrated potent anticoagulant properties, significantly reducing platelet aggregation. Preventing your blood from getting too sticky is vital to healthy circulation and stroke prevention. Boswellia not only lowers factors in your blood that promote stickiness, but it also has a direct impact on the rate of clotting.  In this study it extended the prothrombin time on par with heparin. This study supports the use of boswellia as part of your blood health team.

Cellular Health

One of the hot topics in cancer research is the subject of epigenetics. Epigenetics deals with the topic of how genes are expressed, rather than a true genetic malfunction based on a change to the DNA sequence. Researchers studying epigenetics now realize the power of environment and nutrition to influence gene function and thus cancer risk.  New research shows that boswellia is another nutrient that can influence epigenetic function.  Working with colon cancer cells researchers found that boswellia changed epigenetic function so that tumor suppressor genes started functioning again.

Boswellia has been shown to reduce inflammation and free radical damage. Specifically, it is shown to reduce inflammatory nitric oxide (iNOS), thereby helping asthma sufferers improve their health. In patients undergoing radiation therapy for brain tumors, boswellia significantly reduced inflammatory swelling and edema in the brain . Inflammatory processes typically promote the spreading of cancer. Researchers at the MD Anderson Cancer Center found that Boswellia deactivates the key receptor on cancer cells (pancreatic and breast cancer cells were tested) that allows the cancer to spread and invade. Another recent study on mice with implanted tumors found that Boswellia reduced tumor size and increased survival time. A detailed analysis of the Boswellia-treated tumors showed that Boswellia activated gene signals that caused tumor cell death. The researchers concluded, “The present study sheds light on the potent antitumor property of the boswellic acid and can be extended further to develop therapeutic protocols for treatment of cancer.”
